General Information about Ionian
The population of the Prefecture of the Ionian is about 202.000 inhabitants, according to the estimation of ESYE for the year 1998 and is corresponding at the 1,9% of the total population of the whole country. The civil population is going up to the 26% of the total population (1991) and it is presenting augment trends in reference to the year 1981, the rural population at the 63% of the total poulation and it is presenting a little increace, but the half-civil population is less to the 11% of the total. The prefecture of Corfu is concentrating the 1,1% of the population of the whole country, the prefecture of Lefkada is concentrating the 0,2%(it is the smallest prefecture in the population point of view),the perfecture Kefalinnia & Ithaki the 0,3% and the perfecture of Zakynthos also the 0,3% of the whole country.
The Ionian Islands have an important position in the touristic development so at the level of country as in a mediterranean and European level. The advantages of the Perifery from the climate part, geographical position, natural, archeological and other civil resources they are making worthy suitably, so as to make the Region of Ionian Islands a powerful and steady pole of attraction, in comparison with the development of special kinds of tourism, as the rural tourism, the winter tourism, the conference tourism, the religious tourism, etc. From arrivals' datas of visitors at the airports, it is seemed that there is a big proportion of the charter flights,as a matter of fact,it proves the important position that they have as a national touristic destination.
Documents: if you are E. U. citizens no special papers are needed to visit Greece, all the other citizens need their passports and for more info they can contact their embassies or consulates in Greece.
Animals: before being carried to this land they need a certificate of good health and an antirabic prophylaxis. The certificate has to have a more than 12 months validity, more than 6 months for cats and it has to be made at least 6 days before arrival.
Health: in Corfu town you can find St. Irini hospital where you can ask for help showing your sanitary card. There are many private clinics and doctors that speak English in the city beyond surgeries and pharmacies in many tourist resorts of Corfu.
Clothing: only in churches and monasteries proper cloths are required (trousers or long skirts and t-shirts with sleeves). Some churches supply shawls to the visitor that is not properly dressed just before the visit.
Clock: time in Greece is two hours ahead the Greenwich’s meridian. Like everywhere in Europe also in Greece, in the Summer season (March – September) the daylight saving time is effective.
Something curious ... Time in Greece is conceived in a very particular way: here time is not running, there is no being on time and the clock is only something to wear. The Greeks themselves are aware of taking it easy under every respect up to the point that G.M.T. is not considered as the Greenwich Meridian Time, but as the Greek Maybe Time.
Electricity: outlets in Greece are double and not triple, as such we suggest to travel with an adaptor.
Telephone: there are many public telephone boxes from where it is possible to make telephone calls with pre-paid telephone cards that you can buy in every local shop. It is possible to make national and international telephone calls even from the OTE’s office (Greek Organization of Telecommunications) open from Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 14:00. In the office there are also some positions for public use. The telephone code to call in Greece is 0030.
Money: as a member of the European Community also in Greece the current money is Euro.
The most famous credit cards can be used in Corfu to pay accommodation, restaurants, rentals... and the travellers cheques can be changed into every bank or change office. Tips in restaurants are not obligatory, it’s up to you...
